History of LGDK

Danish municipalities have a longstanding tradition of uniting in communities of interest. LGDK is an interest and member organisation for the Danish municipalities which has existed since 1970.

LGDK is a result of the local government reform in Denmark in 1970 where 1,336 municipalities were reduced to only 275.

As a result of the reform, the then three local government associations for different sizes of municipalities decided to join forces and founded Local Government Denmark.

In September 2001, LGDK had a new logo and design and it was decided to call the association "Local Government Denmark (LGDK)".

Since 2005, when the City of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg Municipality teamed up, all municipalities in Denmark have been members of LGDK.

On 1 January 2007, a new Local Government Reform came into force and the number of municipalities was reduced to 98.
