Strategy for Climate Adaptation

In the spring of 2008, the municipality of Hedensted adopted a strategy for climate adaptation. The strategy is based on the climate scenarios of the UN climate council (IPCC).

The main aims of the strategy are as follows:

That all new neighborhoods, new urban areas and new infrastructure shall be established and constructed in a manner that takes into account the effects of climate change equivalent to a scenario which is higher than the IPCC scenario A1

To assess the extent of possible safeguarding of existing buildings and infrastructure in existing urban areas on the basis of the IPCC's present expectations to climate changes (presently scenario A2). And in each case to assess whether it is economically advantageous to take precautions against climate changes

Any action taken to protect against the effects of climate change will be coordinated with the interventions to be implemented as a result of the Water Frame Directive, and that measures will be designed to fulfill their purpose for the next 100 years, with the expected evolution of the climate.

Process

Public discussions about future challenges for people, development and existing buildings, constructions etc.

Intense and detailed political discussions on future challenges based on public meetings, statements from the IPCC and other stakeholders in the public debate

Preliminary analyses of the climate-based challenges in a local context

Financing
Part of, and partly a consequence of the regular Planning Strategy for the municipality of Hedensted which is a mandatory administrative assignment.
