International Municipalities

LGDK has noticed an increasing interest in international activities among the Danish municipalities. This is probably due to the important role that international affairs play for local government. It is also expected that the creation of the larger municipalities in Denmark will mean that they will be more capable of participating in international activities and projects.

Has the local government reform resulted in more internationally oriented municipalities in Denmark? The question has received major attention, and this article will try to clarify the matter.

CASE: North Funen – International Activities for the Local Trade and Industry

North Funen Business Council considers international cooperation a natural part of our activities and this is the reason why we took the opportunity to commit ourselves to a cooperation with the Lithuanian town Jurbarkas when it presented itself at the beginning of the 1990s.

CASE: Lejre – Friendship with Latvia for 10 Years

On 2 June 1997, a delegation from the county of Roskilde visited its twin county Talsi in Latvia. The delegation included representatives from three municipalities in the county of Roskilde – Bramsnæs, Skovbo and Lejre. The visit proved to be very important for the future cooperation.
