Køge Kommune (Køge Municipality) invests in energy-saving measures in its own buildings.
Project
Køge Kommune (Køge Municipality) invested DKK 5 million in energy-saving measures in its own buildings in 2008 and from 2009 investments will increase to DKK 10 million per year.
The goal is to save energy while achieving financial savings. To reach this goal a wide range of solutions can be employed, i.e. replacement of old boilers, old windows and ventilation systems and added insulation.
The project is led by a municipal engineer, who assess buildings and prioritize needs. Each institution is responsible for its own economy and hence its own energy consumption.
Consumption Monitoring
As an important part of the energy project, Køge Kommune joined an Internet-based monitoring system. In this way all municipal institutions get aware of their own energy use and they can see that it is useful to save. Institutions may also compare themselves with other institutions.
A municipal employee has access to all data and will continuously check that data is actually entered and assess data. This backup also ensures a reaction, if consumption increases dramatically.
Results
Many studies show that 5 to 10% savings can be achieved simply by monitoring consumption.
Each project is expected to have an average payback of 6 years. In other words, if DKK 1,000 is invested, energy saving will be equivalent to DKK 170 (~ 150 kWh). Investment to the tune of DKK 10 million annually will provide an additional saving of 1.5 million kWh.
Financing
These investments are financed by the municipal coffers. A savings forecast is calculated after the investment and the institution will pay back to Køge Kommune 90% of the calculated savings.
