Family Housing in the Future: Herfølge

Køge Kommune (Køge Municipality), The Agenda 21 Committee and Det Grønne Hus (Agenda 21 Centre Køge) are behind the project, which aims to show family houses for the future.

Project
The project is located at a newly developed site in Herfølge, just south of Køge. The project is Denmark's first and largest project in environmental friendly and energy-saving houses with ecolabel.

The goal is to demonstrate that technology exists to build healthy, energy-saving houses, at the same cost as a traditional family house.

The project is a living exhibition (scale 1:1) which shows that you can dwell in energy-saving and environmental friendly peri-urban familyhouse, without a lot of do-it-yourself nor compromising the comfort of a traditional family house.

The idea of the project is to show that sustainable construction also can resemble traditional and popular building types. The big difference is the environmental initiatives, such as better insulation, better windows and good/healthy materials.

At the same time the project targets the construction industry and municipalities, who will get valuable knowledge concerning planning and construction family houses for the future.

Process
All parts of the building project are developed in close dialogue with the construction industry, researchers, enthusiasts, town planning consultants, municipalities and various advisers.

Through the process a number of seminars have been held to get the architects and the construction industry prepared to design and build for the project and for the future and a range of experts have been involved in this process.

Today, several of the houses are sold and occupied by families. But the project is not over yet. Energy-saving and other issues are evaluated over time with the aim to gather valuable experience that can improve the family houses in the future.

The evaluation carried out in collaboration with a number of specialists from research institutions, such as the Danish Institute of Building & Construction Research (SBI) and the Danish Institute of Technology (TI).

Financing
The project development and coordination is financially supported by Realdania and Nykredit, and technical support is provided by Energy Service Denmark (Energitjenesten). The Energy Saving Trust (Elsparefonden) provide the measuring equipment for evaluation.

Finally, Køge Municipality contributed with flexible arrangements and credits for construction companies purchase of land.

Houses are, besides the environmental criteria, built on general terms and without support. Thus, the project idea can easily be copied in any municipality.
