Solar Cells – Project Photo Skive

The country's largest photovoltaic power stations with a total production capacity of 1 MWp (peak value) are listed in Skive. Solar cells are distributed on many municipal buildings, and the total power generation is expected to be close to one third of Denmark's total electricity production from solar cells.

Project description
The investment, however, gives no savings for the citizens in the first place. It is a long-term investment. People get the cheap electricity in about 15-20 years. According to energy investment company Renewagi, a solar PV of 1 MWp make 1000 MWh per year or about production from half a wind turbine. This provides enough energy to supply 450 households with electricity. Typically, it takes 2-3 months to build a facility of this size.

The project is the first phase of the photovoltaic plans in Skive that are well anchored in the global climate and energy strategy. The main purpose of the proposed photovoltaic project is to implement about one MW solar cell production capacity of a wide range of municipal buildings from nurseries to schools, hospitals and technical/administrative facilities and private buildings. The total annual net electricity production is estimated at 850,000 kWh. For each group of buildings, there is an information campaign and the results will be monitored. The project will be a combined technical demonstration and an act that creates awareness on climate and energy.

The solar PV, which becomes a part of Photo Skive, will be equipped with meters to measure energy. These meters will be remotely and be monitored through the existing AMR system, where the annual electricity production from the solar PV can be reported. Simultaneously, any malfunction which causes decline in production can be detected and repaired.

The project will be implemented over three and a half year.

Financing
Solar technology is not yet competitive and financial support will be needed to promote incentives. Installation is estimated at approx. 45 million DKK, and in 2008 decided the Energy Board through PSO and ForskVE programme to support the project with 22 million. The remaining approx. 23 million DKK will be financed by Skive municipality through loans.

Status and results
An architect firm works in finding suitable locations on the municipality roofs and facades for the many m2 of solar PV.
