Through a partnership with citizens, it was proven successful to reduce the average annual CO2 emissions in the village of Guldager with more than one tonne per capita.
In 2007-2008 the village of Guldager in participation with the municipality entered into a successful program for reducing CO2 emissions. All the inhabitants had their CO2 emission measured during a full year and managed to reduce the emission by one ton of CO2 in average.
The incentive for individual citizens was enhanced by conducting a competition between the different streets of Guldager, to see which street could cut their emissions the most.
For more information about the project is to be found to the right side.
Process
The cooperation between Esbjerg Municipality and the Guldager Citizens' Association began in January 2007. CO2 emissions were calculated over the period of a year from May 2007 to May 2008.
Financing
The cost of meetings, guidance and interviews (approx. 125.000 DDK) was financed by the municipality.
Establishing remote reading of heating and electricity consumption was financed by the utility companies as a pilot project before establishing it in the entire municipality.
Status and result
The average annual CO2 emission per capita for people living in the town of Guldager is 3.22 tonnes, or more than one tonne under the national average.
