As part of the current urban development of the former slaughterhouse site near the harbour front in Nørresundby, there are plans to renovate the existing harbour promenade and the connecting road between the two bridges, Limfjordsbroen and the railway bridge.
Project description
It is an important element in the overall renovation project to raise the level of the wharf from the existing level of about 1.00 m to approx. 1.90 m to avoid future flooding of the harbour promenade and the buildings behind as a result of climate changes.
Due to the fact that the street level is relatively low, this part of the centre of Aalborg has most often experienced the effects of autumn and winter storms. But it is also one of the urban areas near Limfjorden where the life of the fjord and the quality and the moods of the water are most delightful to watch – and it is therefore crucial to establish high water protection in the area to ensure that it is safe and to make room for activities along the edge of the water to the benefit of the many new residents and visitors in the area.
Schønherr Landskab / Rambøll Danmark A/S have prepared an idea proposal for a new design of the wharf differentiating the levels so that the street level in principle is kept unchanged at 1.00 m, and a 5 m wide harbour promenade is established at 1.35 m with a parapet of 1.70 / 1.90 (highest where the waves are highest). On the exterior of the parapet at the water's edge, a 4-5 m wide wooden bridge will be added at a level of 0.6 m offering barbeque facilities and other opportunities for outdoor activities.
Process and financing
DKK 30 million has been set aside on the budget of the municipality to complete the project and the preliminary steps in the project as well as dialogues with stakeholders are ongoing. Construction work is expected to start at the beginning of 2010 and according to plan it should be completed by the end of 2011.
