Albertslund was planned and constructed in the period from the 1960s to the 1980s. In particular the building boom of the 1960s put its mark on the city of Albertslund today. Structures, materials, building methods and the rapid building of that time mean that many dwellings today are worn out with poor indoor climate and large heat consumption.
Urban renewal of the city has started in Albertslund South and will continue with renovation of a large number of residential areas. This is a unique opportunity to modernise the city and turn it into a climate-friendly place. The vision is that the climate renovation of the residential areas in the municipality will be the lever for sustainable development of Albertslund. Opportunities are now given to carry out a holistic renewal incorporating social, economic and environmental considerations in parallel to bringing the city back on the architectural map.
Project description
The Municipality of Albertslund in cooperation with consultants, manufacturers, researchers and housing associations has been granted support from the Danish Energy Agency for the Albertslund Concept in the period 2008-2011.
As yet it has not been clarified how the extensive task concerning energy renovation of residential areas constructed after 1960 can be solved in technical and financial terms, bringing the new renovated residential areas up to the same energy-efficient standard as new and modern houses. As a novelty, the Albertslund Concept is therefore planned to demonstrate that cost-efficient low-energy renovation of dwellings is feasible, allowing for integrated energy-efficient renovation in an easy and cost-efficient manner.
Process and results
In Albertslund a number of trial renovation projects will be conducted as demonstration projects up to minimum low energy class 1, with the same or better overall economy than low energy class 2. Solutions must also pay due respect to all requirements for good and functional dwellings of high architectural and aesthetic value, good indoor climate, healthy materials, good daylight and high comfort.
Topics for climate renovation of trial houses – subsidised and private dwellings
A trial house in the subsidised residential area of Hyldespjældet will be the farthest-reaching energy renovation as low energy class 0. The house will be decoupled from the district heating grid and get energy from wind, sun and ground. Solar prism, solar collectors, solar cells and a specially designed ground source heating facility will be used for generation of hot water and electricity for the house.
In Albertslund South a subsidised block of six attached houses will be totally renovated into low energy class 1 in combination with a number of refurbishments of the houses. The block will be prepared for low-temperature district heating in combination with solar heating. The renovation will be carried out as a first phase of the renovation of all attached houses in Albertslund South and renovation of the residential area of Gårdhusene.
After completion of the renovation measurements will be made regularly of energy consumption, and calculations and results measured will be compared. Results of the project will be very valuable for the decision whether to carry on low energy renovation in general in Albertslund South and other residential areas of Albertslund.
In two private residential areas energy renovation up to low energy class 1 will be carried out. Here, two low energy solutions will be demonstrated consisting of several different measures liable to be implemented step by step. House owners in any subsequent renovations will be able to choose the measures they wish and can afford.
Financing
The Albertslund Concept has a budget of just below DKK 18 million (EUR 2.4 million) of which DKK 5.5 million (EUR 0.7 million) through support from the Danish Energy Agency. The Municipality of Albertslund contributes with around DKK 3 million (EUR 0.4).
Display
Energy renovation has been carried out in two attached houses in Albertslund South (Bjørnens Kvarter). This is not directly part of the Albertslund Concept, but experience is used in current and future energy renovation projects in the Albertslund Concept and in house renovations in general in Albertslund.
