ARCHIMEDES – Sustainable Transport

Traditionally, Aalborg has been among the leading towns in Europe in terms of sustainable mobility. Considering the increasing climate and environmental problems, it is important for the municipality of Aalborg to continue to contribute positively to the work involved in reducing energy consumption and pollution.

Project description
As part of this activity the City of Aalborg together with five other cities in Europe are involved in the ARCHIMEDES project within the CIVITAS+ framework.

The overall goal for CIVITAS+ is to increase energy efficiency, increase the share of bio fuel and other alternative fuels, contribute to a more efficient urban transport, increase traffic safety in urban areas and increase sustainable transport and thereby reducing the climate and environmental effects of transport.

In addition to the concrete effect in the cities involved, experiences will be collated and communicated for the benefit of other cities in Europe of a similar size.

Process
In the period from 2008 to 2012, the Aalborg project will implement 20 sub-projects under ARCHIMEDES grouped as follows:

1. Increase of the share of alternative fuels

  • a. Introduce bio-diesel in 50 buses, 5 lorries and 45 vans

  • b. Promote eco-driving and safe driving for professional drivers through a campaign

2. Promotion of the use of collective transport

  • Introduce a sightseeing shuttle bus using bio-fuel

  • Introduce the Travel Card in 80 buses

  • Enhance traffic information on the internet

3. Demand management

  • Influence the driving pattern and intensity by revising parking systems

4. Travel behaviour and choice of means of transport

  • Development of a bicycle campaign

  • Development of company commuter plans

5. Safe and secure infrastructure

  • Development of a safe and secure environment for vulnerable road users

  • Establishment of speed limits

6. Alternative and energy-efficient means of transport

  • Establishment of a bicycle highway between the centre of Aalborg and the University

  • Introduction of city bikes

  • Increase knowledge of carpooling

7. Goods transport and city logistics

  • Environment zone in the centre of Aalborg

8. Innovative ITS

  • Introduction of monitors in buses

  • Further development of traffic information on mobile phones

  • More information on areas with heavy traffic

Financing
The ARCHIMEDES project is an integrating project including 6 European cities from 6 countries. The consortium is managed by the project secretariat in the department dealing with traffic and roads in the municipality of Aalborg. The Aalborg project is a cooperation between the Administration for Technology and Environment, the Administration for Health and Sustainable Development and the transport company, Nordjyllands Trafikselskab, as well as a number of local partners.

EU finances up to about 60% of the project.

Status and result
The project is in its preliminary phase. On 1 February 2009, an environmental zone that places special demands on the exhaust of heavy vehicles was opened in the centre of Aalborg. During 2009, traffic information on the internet will be improved, more than 100 city bikes will be made available in Aalborg, and commuter plans for companies will be prepared with a view to changing current transport habits. A car pool scheme will be marketed. All the projects aim to reduce the environmental impact of transport.

Demonstration
As the project is still in its start phase and implementation of the concrete projects is planned for 2010 and 2011, there are no obvious demonstration sites. City bikes will be available from July 2009.
