With the public-private partnership Project Zero, the municipality of Sønderborg aims at becoming CO2 neutral.
Project description
The municipality of Sønderborg has a vision to contribute to solving the challenges posed by global heating and climate changes. The project is based on the strengths of local trade and industry within intelligent energy management and a strong agricultural cluster specialised in production of porkers.
The geographical area of the new municipality of Sønderborg will be 100% CO2 neutral by 2029. This will make the municipality of Sønderborg the first CO2 neutral society in Europe and an example of how to create dynamic and sustainable growth through a strong local effort. The municipality of Sønderborg wants to be a global role model within:

Development of a new concept for citizen involvement
The project has special focus on substantial energy reduction through application of modern technology and energy supply from sustainable sources. All these approaches are based on a high degree of stakeholder involvement.
The project should also contribute to the branding of the municipality of Sønderborg.
Process
The project has started as a public-private partnership between the trade and industry and the municipality. The municipality's own projects are coordinated by the Climate Secretariat. Overall project management is coordinated in the organisation Project Zero in which a broad range of players are represented.
Focus is on the establishment of interdisciplinary cooperation and business models, development and implementation of new technologies and development of training models to ensure that the project is embedded in the society. Massive branding will attract innovation.
Financing
Project Zero A/S is established by the fund Project Zero which is subsidised by a number of enterprises and funds.
Status and results
In May 2008, a proposal was submitted as to how the vision of CO2 neutrality can be obtained.
