Holistic Water Administration

The municipality of Odense is participating in a major research project to create the basis for a more local stormwater management.

Project description
The municipality of Odense is participating in a research project called 2BG (Black, Blue and Green Integrated Infrastructure Planning as Key to Sustainable Urban Water Systems). The project includes all the urban water systems and the interaction with the developed and the green areas of the city. The purpose is to establish a planning and decision basis for landscape-based draining.

Project focus is to handle rainwater locally rather than straining the sewer system. In this way, the municipality will be better equipped to handle increased amounts of rainwater due to climate changes. The goal is less flooded basements and less rainwater being led into natural streams.

Process
The project is a working relationship between three universities, four municipalities, the Danish Road Directorate, Danva and the Danish Town Planning Institute. It will run for a period of four years and will be completed in 2010.

Financing
The project is supported by the Danish Council for Strategic Research and the above-mentioned participants in the project.

Status and results
At this point in time the project is in its first year. Under the heading "Odense as a Master Case", two working documents have been prepared based on three sub-reports:

  • Climate adjustment and sustainable urban development to promote innovation. Example: Stormwater management through landscape-based draining

  • Landscape-based draining of the city – why and how?

Presentation
An presentation of the project is available in Danish and English.
