In Frederikshavn, the goal is to be powered by renewable energy exclusively by 2015.
Project description
In 2015, renewable energy will power electricity, heating and transport in the municipality of Frederikshavn where they want to demonstrate that it is possible to supply an entire city with renewable energy based on a broad strategy. The municipality will be a glowing example of Danish energy technology where technologies are developed, tested and demonstrated.
Process
The project was created during Energy Camp 06, an innovation camp for the Danish energy industry. The project is owned by the Local Council, but it is driven by the foundation Energicity Frederikshavn which is responsible for the entire project. The purpose of the foundation is to develop a renewable energy system for the city and to strengthen regional and local business structures by attracting new companies involved in renewable energy technology. In addition, the foundation will create awareness of the project and the solutions.
Financing
The vision requires major investments from the public sector, private enterprises and the citizens. It has been decided that the investments has to be worthwhile both environmentally and financially. Therefore, one guideline prescribes that the project is to be carried out on market terms, but the project is also looking for funding.
Status and results
Currently, 17% of total energy in Frederikshavn is renewable energy. A sub-goal of 40% renewable energy by 2009 is being considered.
In addition, Frederikshavn has undertaken to reduce CO2 emissions by 3% annually in connection with the project of the Danish Society for Nature Conservation regarding climate municipalities.
Calculations for the development of a renewable energy system and various scenarios are expected to be completed around 2010 at which time a political decision will be made.
In collaboration with the University of Aalborg, the municipality of Frederikshavn has established a working group to plan the practicalities involved in the project. A 3D model of the energy city is being prepared in collaboration with an external company.
