In 2015, Copenhagen will be known as the capital in the world with the best metropolitan environment – without any consequences for the economic growth.
Project description
The Environmenta Capital of Europe is the vision for Copenhagen in 2015. The City of Copenhagen wants to show the world how you can reduce CO2 emission without limiting financial growth. Environmental considerations may add dynamics to urban development. Copenhageners and their guests will be able to feel and see the improvements, and the entire city is expected to take on active responsibility for the global environmental development.
The vision is that Copenhagen will be the centre of world climate politics, but the City of Copenhagen also has a very specific and ambitious climate goal:
Process
The vision was adopted by the City Council in December 2007. A climate plan will now be prepared to define specific approaches to reach the 2015 goal. The plan should show the way for all sectors involved: Urban planning, transport, citizens, companies, public activities, etc.
Financing
The project will be financed by the City of Copenhagen and through external funds.
Status and results
The City Council in Copenhagen has allocated DKK 150 million for climate activities in 2008-2009 which is about DKK 300 per citizen. But more funds are required to reach the CO2 goal by 2015. The funds will be used in various ways such as:
-
Business campaign – DKK 1.5 million
-
Mayor Summit – DKK 2.0 million
-

-
Extraordinary energy renovation of municipal buildings – DKK 71 million
