Climate Campaign for the Citizens in Copenhagen

In the autumn of 2008, the City of Copenhagen will launch a major climate campaign for the citizens.

Project description
In September 2008, the City of Copenhagen was hosting a Climate Festival where the citizen campaign was launched. The primary purpose of the campaign is to make the citizens reduce their CO2 emissions. The campaign will appoint 1,000 citizens as climate guides. These people will receive a visit from a climate consultant who reviews the home and provides climate advice. The visit may be organised as a "home party" where friends, family and colleagues are invited. They will become climate citizens. On their internet profile, both climate guides and climate citizens will promise to reduce their CO2 emission. Competitions, events, presentations, etc. will also be part of the concept and local environment centres will organise climate activities.

In the autumn of 2009, the next phase of the citizen campaign will be launched. Here, the citizens of Copenhagen will be encouraged to present the city's climate initiatives, provide private accommodation for guests, participate as helpers in connection to the many events in the city, etc. In addition, the result of the citizens' CO2 savings will be presented to the guests at the UN's Climate Summit (COP15).

Financing
The project is financed by the City of Copenhagen that contributes DKK 2.5 million over two years and by external funds.

Status and results
In May 2008, five major colleges in Copenhagen presented an imaginative campaign: "College Climate Battle". The purpose of the campaign was to save electricity and water and thereby reduce the CO2 emission. A climate consultant from the City of Copenhagen visited one of the colleges and gave advice. Everything has been recorded and posted on the internet as short and entertaining films that everyone can see and learn from.
