Climate Summit – Meet the Exhibitors

At the Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit there was an exhibition area. At the different stands, there were presentations of innovative solutions in the field of climate change, environment and energy. In this page, you can find short descriptions of the exhibitors – listed in alphabetical order.

CEMR – Council of European Municipalities and Regions

CEMR is the largest organisation for local and regional government in Europe; its members are more than 50 national associations of towns, municipalities and regions from 37 countries. Together these associations represent around 100,000 local and regional authorities. CEMR works to promote a united Europe that is based on local and regional self-government and democracy.

Climate Alliance

Climate Alliance is an association of European cities and municipalities that have entered into a partnership with indigenous rainforest peoples. This worldwide alliance is united by a common concern for the world's climate. Their climate protection contributions build upon commitment and diversity at the local level. They view their initiative as a part of efforts towards sustainable development and North-South equity.

Climate Solutions Thy & Mors

Thy and Mors, two municipalities in the northwest of Denmark, have the highest degree of renewable energy usage in Europe and are reference areas for the world with clean climate-friendly energy. From geothermic heat to large scale biogas facilities. Climate Solutions Thy & Mors can show you how to achieve great results with renewable energy. They will be able to put you in contact with the right people for your needs, if you want to investigate clean energy even further.

Committee of the Regions

The European Union's Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the political assembly that provides local and regional authorities with a voice at the heart of the EU. The EU treaties oblige the Commission and Council to consult the Committee of the Regions whenever new proposals are made in areas that have an impact at the regional or local level, including environment issues.

Danish Energy Agency

Danish Energy Agency (Energistyrelsen) is dealing nationally and internationally with production, supply and consumption of energy – as well as the efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The task is to ensure the legal and political framework for reliable, affordable and clean supply of energy in Denmark. The Danish Energy Agency was established in 1976 and is today an agency under the Ministry of Climate and Energy.

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Denmark works for strengthening the ties between the two countries. The priorities of the Embassy include, among other things, cooperation within climate and energy issues.

EUROCITIES

EUROCITIES is a network of major European cities. Founded in 1986, the network brings together the local governments of more than 130 large cities in more than 30 European countries. EUROCITIES provides a platform for its member cities to share knowledge and ideas, to exchange experiences, to analyse common problems and develop innovative solutions, through a wide range of forums, working groups, projects, activities and events.

European Commission, Delegation to Denmark

The European Commission's Delegation to Denmark has the following responsibilities: Speaking for the Commission as its voice in Denmark in a variety of areas, such as climate and energy issues. This includes providing background briefings for the media as well as on-the-record comment on issues relevant to the Commission. The Delegation is reporting back to the Commission in Brussels on political, economic and social developments in Denmark. Finally, the Delegation is providing information about the European Union across Denmark through recognised outlets such as public libraries, business advice centres and education services.

Green Cities

Green Cities is a cooperation between Danish municipalities committed to strengthening the activities for an improved environmental protection and the development of sustainable cities. Green Cities was established in 2000 by the municipalities Albertslund, Ballerup and Copenhagen. Shortly afterwards, Fredericia and Herning joined the cooperation. In 2006, Kolding and Malmö in Sweden entered Green Cities, and on 1 January 2009 Allerød became the newest of the so far eight members of the network.

Halmstad Energy and Environment

Halmstad Energy and Environment (Halmstads Energi och Miljö AB) is supplying approx. 45,000 customers in the Swedish town Halmstad with different services. From waste-management and drinking water to electricity and broadband. Halmstad Energy and Environment was founded on 1 November 2006 and is organised with a holding company and two subsidiary companies: One for energy and environment and another one for IT services. The holding company is 100% owned by the Municipality of Halmstad.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments as well as national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. More than 1,000 cities, towns, counties, and their associations worldwide make up ICLEI's growing number of members. ICLEI works with these and hundreds of other local governments through international performance-based, result-oriented campaigns and programs.

LGAction Project

The LGAction project is implemented by ICLEI, Local Government Denmark, the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling, the Regional Environment Center for Central and Eastern Europe and the Italian LA21 Association. The project is an activity within the European Commission's programme "Intelligent Energy Europe". The project focuses on the role of local governments in combating climate change. Local governments are key players, as the closest level of governance to citizens, and as community leaders. Improvements can be made in services, through efficient measures and technologies. Next key steps are for local governments to take on more responsibility in climate protection and local energy security.

Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark

Kalundborg is a modern and living market town with the greatest deep sea harbour in Denmark. It has approximately 50,000 inhabitants, and its community of private companies is one of the most advanced examples of industrial symbiosis (material exchanges between local manufacturing companies). Today, Kalundborg is a municipality deeply committed to environmental protection with several both national and international projects in this field.

Climate Consortium

Climate Consortium (Klimakonsortiet) is the official focal point for all business-related activities in connection to the UN's climate conference, COP15, in Copenhagen i 2009. The Climate Consortium is a public-private partnership, established in June 2008 to strengthen the knowledge domestically and abroad of the competence and products of Danish businesses and science institutions in the field of climate and energy.

Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS)

The association was founded in 1972 as a result of an amalgamation of the Union of Norwegian Cities (founded in 1903) and the Norwegian Association of Rural Municipalities (founded in 1923). As of April 2006 all of the 431 municipalities and 19 counties are members, as well as approx. 500 public entreprises.

  • KS advocates the interests of its members towards central government, the Parliament, labour organisations and other organisations.
  • KS advises and informs the members about all matters and developments of importance to local government.
  • KS facilitates exchange of experience between its members.
  • KS conducts the central collective bargaining on behalf of its members.

Lolland Municipality, Denmark

Wind, water and a wide green landscape. These are some of the characteristics of Lolland, the fourth largest island in Denmark and the leading role model in alternative and renewable energy. Since the beginning of the 1990s, when the first sea windmills in the world were established on the northwest coast of Lolland, the island has made test areas available for alternative energy supply solutions. Lolland is therefore an example of how a focus by the local government on energy and environment companies not only is good for the planet, but also for the development of the local economy. In other words: Environment and business go hand in hand in Lolland.

SALAR – Swedish Association of Local and Regional Authorities

The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions represents the governmental, professional and employer-related interests of Sweden's 290 municipalities, 18 county councils and two regions. The Association strives to promote and strengthen local self-government and the development of regional and local democracy. The mission of SALAR is to provide Swedish municipalities, county councils and regions with better conditions for local and regional self-government.

"Six Major Cities of Denmark"

"Six Major Cities of Denmark" (Seksbyerne) is a cooperation between the six biggest cities in the country: Copenhagen, Århus, Aalborg, Odense, Esbjerg and Randers. The cities are cooperating on, among other things, exchange of experience and best practice. A priority of the "Six Major Cities of Denmark" is to present their climate and energy solutions in connection to the UN Climate Summit in Denmark in 2009.

Spanish Network of Cities for Climate &
Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces

Spanish Network of Cities for the Climate was created as an instrument of coordination by an agreement signed between the network and the Ministry for the Environment. It was designed to promote joint initiatives in planning for urban sustainability. One of the many aims of the network is the provision of solutions and methods that local governments can adapt in the fight against global warming. The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) is a non-profit legal association working for the public interests. Its mission is to promote and defend the autonomy of local authorities and to represent and defend the general interests of local authorities before other public administrative bodies.

UCLG – United Cities and Local Governments

United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) represents and defends the interests of local governments on the world stage, regardless of the size of the communities they serve. United Cities and Local Governments supports international cooperation between cities and their associations, and facilitates programmes, networks and partnerships to build the capacity of local governments. The UCLG is a gateway to relevant information on local government across the world.

UN-HABITAT & UNEP

UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) is the designated authority of the United Nations system in environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review.
