In Albertslund, urban development is about forming a synthesis of sustainability, architecture, and functionality, and it is about daring test and opt for modern and green technology as a contribution to lower energy consumption.
Project description
The Municipality of Albertslund wishes to be a front-running municipality within energy-efficient outdoor LED lighting. Lighting in the Municipality of Albertslund dates back from the 1960s and most lighting facilities are today outdated and energy-intensive. The need for renovation and modernisation of the city's outdoor lighting is a unique opportunity to gain climate benefits.
Process
Together with a large number of partners, the Municipality of Albertslund has carried out a development project supported by the Danish Energy Association. The aim was to develop LED for outdoor lighting and use it in a new Albertslund Lamp.
LED light is diode light, and when used in lighting it has a number of advantages over traditional light sources such as filament bulbs and halogen lamps. LED is energy-efficient, environment-friendly without mercury, and it has a long useful life.
Just as the Albertslund Lamp was designed for the new district of Albertslund South back in the 1960s the new Albertslund Lamp was designed for the new renovated city.
New Albertslund Lamp using LED
60 A Lamps replace 80 Albertslund Lamps giving the same light. With a capital expenditure of DKK 790,000 (EUR 106,000) it only costs DKK 60,000 more to fit the new energy-efficient A Lamps. In return, annual savings amount to 6,100 KWH and a CO2 benefit of 3 tonnes. This corresponds to annual savings of DKK 8,500 (EUR 1,150) and a repayment period of seven years. If also expenses for vandalism and service of the lamps are included, operating expenses are considerably lower and the repayment period shorter.
Results
In 2009 it is a reality that the design classic Albertslund Lamp can be replaced with a newly developed, newly designed and energy-efficient A Lamp. The A Lamp complies with all requirements for light quality, light effect and energy-efficiency, and it has been developed to allow for current replacement of diodes by new and more efficient versions.
In the future, the A Lamp will be used in the city's parks, paths and squares. In 2009 50 A Lamps are fitted on a stretch in the city centre, and we expect to fit 80 A Lamps in connection with a renovation in 2010 of the channel in Albertslund South, a path and promenade stretch of around 1.5 km.
Two other projects concerning newly developed LED lighting are now being tested in practice. 50 new tunnel fittings have been set up at various locations in Albertslund along with solar-powered lighting street slabs. The slabs combine the latest LED technology, solar cells and batteries for accumulation of the solar energy, and they function as a guiding light and division between footpaths and bicycle tracks.
Experience and results from the development of the A Lamp will form the basis for new energy-efficient lighting projects complying with functional, architectural and urban requirements in the new renovated city as an active part of urban development.
Financing
In addition to the Municipality's own financing of DKK 328.000 (EUR 44.000) the project has been supported by the Danish Energy Association NET from PSO funds by DKK 651.000 (EUR 87.440).
Display
A prototype of the new lamp has been fitted in the street of Kanalgaden and in one of the atriums of the City Hall of Albertslund.
