In March 2010, LGDK assisted the government of the Maldives in conducting an awareness campaign on the upcoming local government reform.
The assignment, financed by UNDP, consisted of public lectures and question/answers sessions targeting the parliamentarians, the civil service, civil society organisations and the media and included an appearance on Maldivian national TV.
In addition, LGDK provided consultancy on the decentralisation bill, which was currently debated by the Maldivian Parliament. The Maldives adopted its first democratic constitution in 2008 and subsequently held its first democratic national election for President and for the Parliament. The decentralisation bill anticipates the establishment of 196 island councils, each with 3-5 elected councillors.
